DC Power Supply Coaxial Power Connector Specification

Jaehan Gyopo

Question

I'm looking to buy a DC power supply for my Arty S7-50 and Arty A7-100T, and possibly an Arty Z7-20 too if I can get one.  I'm hoping I can use the same one for all three boards.  Any recommendations?  What are the coaxial power connector's specifications (inner and outer diameters) so I can be certain I get one that will work?  Say, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003LRNRAY?

To partially answer my own question.

The Arty S7 and Arty A7 reference an inner diameter of either 2.1 mm or 2.5 mm, but the Arty Z7 only references an inner diameter of 2.1 mm.  Is that so about only 2.1 mm for the Arty Z7?

I haven't found yet the outer diameter, but am assuming for the moment 5.5 mm.

So I guess if I want a single power connector common for all three boards I should get a 5.5 mm / 2.1 mm power connector like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071HB1589?  If all three boards were to take either 2.1 mm or 2.5 mm, are there any downsides going with 2.5 mm over 2.1 mm, or vice versa?

P.S. I am not affiliated in any way with PWR+, I just found that brand first on Amazon.  There are probably cheaper and/or better power adapter alternatives.

Hi @Jaehan Gyopo,

The Arty S7, Arty A7, and Arty Z7 all use a Kycon KLDX-0202-AC barrel jack power connector, which uses the center positive 2mm inner diameter pin and a 5.5 mm outer diameter in terms of the "industry standard dimensions", since both the 2.1 mm and 2.5 mm inner diameter pins on the power supplies themselves are physically compatible with the 2.0 mm inner diameter on the receiving barrel jack.

The one you found should work fine with all three boards (I can't quite tell if it's center positive or not, nor have I used this specific power supply). Digilent has a power supply that we resell on our website that will also work with the three boards if you wanted to compare it to that, https://digilent.com/shop/12v-3a-power-supply/.

Of course, all three boards can all be powered via their USB connection if you did not want to use an external power supply for whatever reason.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
JColvin
