irvmoy
I have the oscilloscope probes kit and it came with a small bag of accessories. What is the purpose of the yellow plastic caps or tips? Where are the springs used and how are they installed? Thanks!
0 DAQman
I believe they are used for probing the pins on some surface-mount chips. The comb-like structure helps insulate the tip from the other pins.
0 Viktor Nikolov
The "springs" are very important. They are used as short ground leads instead of the usual long lead with the alligator clip. The alligator clip lead works as an antenna, picking up all kinds of noise. If you want to measure a small signal (e.g., a ripple of a DC power supply), you won't be able to do it with the long alligator clip lead because the noise will mask the signal you are measuring. Try measuring some DC power with both leads, and you will see the difference. I found a nice article that explains this in detail.
