How to programmatically set up sensor category for each channel

I am currently try to figure out how to make the setting up for each channel to a 2-wire thermistor more automated similar to how InstaCal does it. Can anyone point me to the right direction?

For the USB-TEMP device, the board configuration must be set manually via InstaCal.
