Basys3 Power Consumption Measurement

BNA

Question

Hi there,

I want to measure the energy consumption drawn by different designs on my Basys3 board.

As I know, there is no integrated current measurement on the board. However, is there any argument against just putting a multimeter behind an external power supply for the Basys3 to get a delta in power consumption (compared to not running a design)? Is there anything, which could corrupt those measurements or any flaw in this thought or something I should take care of?

Best and thanks to the community in advance!

Nicolas

Hi @BNA,

You are correct that the Basys 3 does not have any integrated current measurement.

I do not think there is any reason to not use a multimeter in series with an external power supply to measure the current being drawn by the Basys 3. Setting the JP2 to external disconnects the VBUS from the external voltage so there should be no notable influence with regards to the power draw.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
JColvin
