when students are measuring the average voltage using the AD2 scope they are
getting some large values for the average voltage some not so large, is this due to
a DC offset? If so how can you minimize the value. They are using the wavegen to
output a sine wave with zero offset. How do I get the average voltage closer to zero?

It would be useful if you could post a screenshot...
1. In case the measured period is not multiple of the signal frequency the average will be high, depending on the captured sine periods and the additional fraction.
2. You can use the Zero offset to eliminate device and external circuit DC error.
3. You can recalibrate the device under Settings/ Device Manager.
