compatibility question JTAG-HS2 Programming Cable

(FPGA newbie, but experienced engineer) 

I would like to ask if the JTAG-HS2 programming cable would work to program http://wiki.seeedstudio.com/Spartan-Edge-Accelerator-Board/ which has a  Xilinx Spartan-7 chip

Can this later be used as  JTAG debugger for this chip?

Hi @n3rdx,

The answer is yes and no. While you would likely be able to configure the board with the JTAG HS2, it will not directly connect. The reason for this is that the layout of the JTAG pins on the JTAG HS2 (which you can see in it's reference manual) is different than the JTAG pin layout present on the Spartan Edge Accelerator Board. You could use individual fly wires to connect it properly though (which is what I imagine they expect you to do for the Xilinx Platform Cable).

And yes, you should be able to do JTAG debugging with the JTAG HS2 and Vivado/Xilinx SDK.
