Problem to make JTAG-HS3 cable working

INTT

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a trouble with JTAG-HS3 cable. When I execute boundary scan and initialize chain, then I get the error as follows:

"ERROR:iMPACT : A problem may exist in the hardware configuration. Check that the cable, scan chain, and power connections are intact, that the specified scan chain configuration matches the actual hardware, and that the power supply is adequate and delivering the correct voltage.

Searching through the web, I found the suggestion

https://forums.xilinx.com/t5/FPGA-Configuration/Digilent-JTAG-HS3-error-with-iMPACT-14-7/td-p/759444

which says I should install digilent software. So I searched through the web trying to find a driver from the digilent web page though, I cannot find it. Do we have to install a driver for JTAG-HS3?

I appreciate your advice.

Hi @INTT,

Since it appears you are using ISE and iMPACT, I believe the software you are looking for is available here: https://store.digilentinc.com/digilent-plugin-for-xilinx-tools-download-only/. As noted on the webpage, you will need the Digilent Adept System (for Windows) or Runtime (for Linux) for this to work. The appropriate Adept material is available for download here: https://reference.digilentinc.com/reference/software/adept/start.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
JColvin

Dear JColvin

Thanks for your reply and advice.

We installed the Digilent Adept System v2.19.2 (windows). However, It always showed the Initialization failed. We also tried to install the Utilities windows v2.2.1, but the result was the same.

I attach screenshot of which software installed, and the message when I open Digilent Adept software.

Does the connect (in right top) can choose JtagHs3 tahe means computer can find devise from USB port? But config also show no devices identified.

We still lost some files? Which part could cause initialization failed?

Best Regards,

Hi, I am a newbie, I want to know whether HS3 would work with Spartan 6 FPGA. The guy from whom we buy stuffs is saying that we need to buy xilinx jtag programmer/debugger. But that would cost more than we could afford. I got confused and came here to help. I have also posted a help under new topic but it seemed no one replied. So I came here.

If this is a wrong place for this post I am glad to get it removed.

Thank you.

Hi JColvin. here another newbee. I installed ISE 14.7 on windows 10, wich actually is an installation of ISE on a Linus VM (that's what the installer does). So I am confused about your answer.

My common sense tells me I have to install Runtime in the Virtualbox Linux VM the ISE installer installed in my windows10 host.  Is that correct?

Hi @carlos_valverdeb,

My guess based on this Xilinx thread, https://forums.xilinx.com/t5/FPGA-Configuration/ISE-14-7-Win-10-VMs-target-communication-issue/td-p/884803, also echoed in section 6 of this Xilinx guide: https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx14_7/ug1227-ise-vm-windows10.pdf, page 22, would be that you would need to install it inside the VM and then if it's not being detected (you may need the Digilent Plugin, https://store.digilentinc.com/digilent-plugin-for-xilinx-tools-download-only/, though the language used in UG 1227 makes it seem like it's already included or at least supported) enable pass-through of USB.

Realistically though, if you are planning on programming a Digilent board that is already supported by Adept, I would just generate the bitstream in ISE in VM, and then copy the .bit file out of the VM and into Windows 10 proper and just use Adept in conjunction with the JTAG HS3 in there.

Thank you,
JColvin

Hey thanks for the tips.

I will read those guides and try as you said, and in case it doesn't work, I will try to use the workaround you suggested and post an update later here in the forum.

Thanks!
