I have found an issue in trying to read TDMS files into python using nptdms module. The module author figured out that Waveforms is breaking the TDMS standard in the phase property unit. You can see the issue here: https://github.com/adamreeve/npTDMS/issues/294 I guess this changed recently since I have files where this worked and then it started to be an issue. Right now the problem exists for me in 3.18.1 64-bit Qt5.12.9 Win 10. bad_utf8.tdms good_file.tdms

Wow! I was using the OEM cable, so I tried another and indeed it was the cable!

I have this exact same problem but a little more history: The device used to work. It became intermittent after about a month of use (plug it in 10 times it would work only 5 times after reboot). After that there was a phase where it only worked on one computer. Now it no longer works on any computer. On the Win10 computer that was the most reliable: Plugin and device is not recognized. In the device manager the device status gives This is true for all ports on the PC, with the OEM cable.
