This turned out to be a problem with the way Vivado was running. After rebooting the computer and rerunning the demonstration, everything worked normally.

The GPIO demo is failing because the tcl script is not generating the required subdirectories. sources_1 and constrs_1 are not generated. I put a "puts" statement after the "create_fileset" line for sources_1 and found that it was not being called.
