Second Ethernet Port

FPGA1234

Question

I've a PYNQ 2 board, and would like to add a second ethernet port. Which we can access from the OS and use for malware packet filtering research. Like an inline switch.

The obvious choice is a PMOD, but I wondered if there was a better choice or any suggestions folks had. The linux a driver for a ethernet PMOD is what is bothering me.

Any PMOD Ethernet solution is going to be a 10 Mbps device. The PmodNIC100 is not particularly well supported, especially for FPGA platforms.

While there are boards that could do what you want, your problem is going to be finding a platform that has a pre-built PYNQ image and potential for multiple Ethernet PHYs.

It won't be cheap. The Zedboard plus an FMC quad mezzanine card might be the cheapest Xilinx possibility. OPSERO has good support for their FMC Ethernet cards. Evidently, there are people who've created a PYNQ build for the Zedboard but I have no experience with that.

There just aren't many cheap Xilinx platforms with 2 1 GbE PHYs.
