Ammeter for Analog Discovery Studio

FrankS

Question

Are there any plans of offering a true Ammeter as add-on or in a new version of the Analog Discovery Studio?

I know there is a work around of measuring the voltage drop over a known resistor. But that restricts the positions in the circuit where you can measure the current and is not satisfactory for student labs.

Hi @FrankS,

I am not aware of any plans of an Ammeter to be offered, but the more requests we get the more likely such a supplementary product would be developed.

Digilent will be coming out with a Analog Discovery Pro Test and Measurement device that will have current measurement directly; the page (as noted) is still under construction with regards to guides and layout, but you can view some more details about it here: https://digilent.com/reference/test-and-measurement/analog-discovery-pro-5250/start. From what I have checked though, all of the listed hardware specifications are accurate.

Thanks,
JColvin

If you have any specific needs for an Ammeter, feel free to let me know. The Test and Measurement Product Manager let me know that the Canvas boards are relatively easy to develop, but would prefer to tailor them to some spoken needs.

Thanks. It's great that a new version with ammeter is planned. However, on first view it looks like the DMM has only one channel. However, we would like to measure voltage and current in the same circuit simultanuously. The Analog Discovery has to voltmeter channels shared with the oscilloscope. Are these still available in the Pro version? So could we measure with two voltage channels (oscilloscope) and the one DMM channel (for the ammeter) simultanuously?

Also for the wavefronts software, it would be great if all simultanuous voltage and current measurements can be logged in a table with the same time base.

Another questions to see if this would fit our needs:

- What will be the price of the Academic version?

- Nice to have (but not strictly required): Will there be an Analog Studio like version which integrates the bread board?

Hi @FrankS,

I don't have a ADP5250 to test directly, but my understanding based on what I've seen in some beta versions of the WaveForms software is that you will be able to use the two oscilloscope channels and the DMM channel simultaneously. If they used the same resources, like the Oscilloscope and the Network Analyzer for example, then you would only be able to use one or the other.

I don't believe you will be able to have both Oscilloscope and the DMM on the same graph, though @attila will be better able to comment on that.

I will ask about the pricing and the Analog Discovery Studio, though for the Analog Discovery Studio it would likely be a separate Canvas that could be attached to the board.

Thanks,
JColvin

Thanks. In the analog discovery, the oscilloscope channel can be used as simple voltmeter. It would be good to keep that functionality.

Also, I am glad that an ammeter will be available for the analog discovery in the future. That will likely be everything I need.
