engrpetero's post in PS GPIO - baremetal was marked as the answer
Well - trial and error (and looking at the notes in the interrupt example file header) resulted in me just trying '7' for the output (LED4) and '50' and '51' for the pushbuttons PB4, PB5. Problem solved.

engrpetero's post in More on that pesky MIO second UART was marked as the answer
ugh. The cable for the MIO UART was bad. Comm over both PS Uarts seems to be working now and I can continue debugging.
